Usage of Past Tense in Subject Verb Agreement

Usage of Past Tense in Subject Verb Agreement:

As you know a verb must always agree with its subject in number. A singular subject requires a singular verb; a plural subject requires a plural verb.

In the use of past tense, the verb form will generally look the same whether you have a singular or plural subject. Let’s take a look at some examples.

A)   A sentence with a singular subject in the past tense would be expressed as:

  • The child waved at me.
  • She smiled at the joker.
  • B)  Similarly, a plural subject in the past tense would be expressed as:

  • The children waved at me.
  • They smiled at the joker
  • The following is another example:

  • Mary visited the doctor. (Singular subject, past tense)
  • Jack and Jill visited the doctor. (Plural subject, past tense)
  • NOTE :  An exception is the verb “to be.”  When talking about the past, the to be verb changes its form again. This is how it looks with the different subject pronouns.

  • I was tired this morning.
  • She was tired this morning.
  • You were tired this morning.
  • We were tired this morning.
  • They were tired this morning.
